The Independent Society for Education and Human
Rights is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, leader in Civic
Education. Members of this organization are e united by their beliefs
in the democratization of society through their own examples and
through civic education on the basis of democratic values.
The objectives of the organization are:
The democratization of society through education
Supporting democratic reforms in education
Promoting and respecting the principles
and values stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
other national and international documents on human rights
Active cooperation and participation in national, European, and international projects on civic education
Active involvement in educational institutions related to civic society
Permanent teaching staff training in democracy and Human Rights
Elaboration of Civic Education Standards.
The SIEDO organization was established in February
1996, by a group of young lawyers and pedagogues. At present it has 18
members. It is not and it does not intend to become a mass
organization. Only 7-10 employees take part in the permanent activities
of SIEDO, while more employees take part in different programs without
being members of the organization.

Beneficiaries of our programs are pedagogues of
all educational levels, educational system managers, students, Local
Public Administration representatives, local advisors, mayors,
penitentiary employees, journalists, and civil society representatives.
At present, the SIEDO programs reach over 1,500 individuals.
In 1997 SIEDO signed an agreement with the
Ministry of Education and Science and Amnesty International, according
to which they promise to support educational democratic reforms. This
agreement also stipulates elaboration of some thematic materials,
mutual information about implemented activities in Human Rights and
Civic Education domain.
In May 1998, European Union and United States of America awarded the prize Democracy and Civil Society to
SIEDO for their achievements in promoting democratic and civil society
values. This award was given to the best 50 NGOs around the world in
celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights
Education is a priority of the democratization
process in a post-totalitarian society. The e founders of this
organization decided to choose civic education as their main objective.
Thus SIEDO offers the following programs:
Created basis of a united concept Civic
Education standards on the national and international levels,
accessible for lyceum students, teachers, schools
Elaborated the t Human Rights Education,
Civic Education, Law Education autochthon didactic material (student’s
manual, teacher’s guide) for lyceums
Created a teachers network, of those
that can facilitate training on Civic Education/Law Education, and can
elaborate their own educational materials, and can be used as
instructors in different training/programs
Initiated collaboration between superior education institution, SIEDO and lyceums
Started elaborating yearly school
programs, a variety of Civic Education manuals, offering an example of
a new discipline on a lyceum level
Consolidated a partnership between a
segment of Civil Society (SIEDO) and authority from the educational
domain (the Ministry of Education)
SIEDO has a Resource Center
that consists of more than 2 thousand books, magazines, dictionaries,
reports of different local and foreign state and non-governmental
organizations. These materials cover the following areas: pedagogy,
psychology, law, civic education, history, politics, management,
communication sciences and can be read in Romanian, Russian, English,
and French.
SIEDO's Public Relations sector was
created in order to maintain a better cooperation between the
organization and the beneficiaries. Keeping the correspondence,
assisting the Resource Centers beneficiaries, editing Civic Education
Bulletin “Alternative XXI”, analyzing staff members’ and beneficiaries’
feedback, keeping the work relation with journalists and other PR
responsible from the other organizations – are the main activities of
the responsible person for the PR.
